Seeking New Library Director

The Carlinville Public Library is seeking a Library Director. An annual salary of at least $30,000 (depending on experience and education) plus benefits will be offered. Director

of the 

Carlinville Public Library

The Carlinville Public Library Director (Director) is a full-time employee of the City of Carlinville and is eligible for the City’s employee benefits package, including participation in Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) and access to group health insurance. The Director works a flexible schedule of 40 hours per week, normally Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; however, hours may be altered as needed to accommodate the Library’s schedule, staff availability, other meetings, etc.  The Director reports directly to the Carlinville Public Library Board of Trustees (Board).

Director’s duties include, are not limited to:

  • Managing day-to-day functions of the Library in accordance with its Policy Handbook;
  • Supervise Library staff, including hiring (with Board approval), training, scheduling, approving of vacation and sick time, evaluating job performance, and disciplining, if needed;
  • Oversee the Library’s collection, including selection of new books and other materials, preparation of items for circulation, and disposal of unnecessary items, under the guidelines of the Library’s Materials Selection Policy;
  • Manage the Library’s finances by maintaining financial records, preparing payments to vendors, and rendering periodic financial reports;
  • Prepare all annual federal, state, and local reports and publications as required by law;
  • Serve as the Library’s primary liaison with the community and other libraries;
  • Seek alternative funding sources (including grants) for Library needs;
  • Maintain the Carlinville Public Library Facebook page, website (carlinvillelibrary.org), and other social networking;
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls (fire, police, etc.);
  • Maintain sufficient familiarity with each staff position to train new employees or perform those duties when necessary;
  • Stay up-to-date on library management topics by participating in professional development opportunities such as readings, meetings, webinars, etc.;
  • Working with the Board:
  • Attend Board meetings;
  • Arrange for Board meetings by setting the meeting agenda, publicly posting the agenda, and preparing written narrative reports on the Library’s activities, financial reports, and vendor payments for Board approval;
  • Develop and recommend policies and procedures for board approval;
  • Update the monthly and annual calendars for Board approval;
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Library Board

Minimum requirements include:

  • An earned Baccalaureate degree is preferred; however, a non-degreed candidate with 5 or more years of relevant experience may be considered.
  • Ability to lift and carry loads up to 20 pounds and push a book cart carrying up to 200 pounds
  • Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills, including the ability to effectively resolve conflicts
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Commitment to providing superior customer service and relations
  • Because this position is funded primarily with local tax revenues, preference will be given to qualified candidates who live within the Carlinville Public Library tax district.
