Site of Historic Standard Oil Mine Office

Site of Standard Oil Mine Office: (257 North Broad Street)

Although the Standard Oil of Indiana Company operated two mines in Carlinville, one on the northeast edge of town and the other eight miles east of the city, the main office for the Standard Oil of Indiana was located closer to the town square (1918-1925).   Standard Mine No. 2 in Standard City became the largest mine in Illinois, employing 650 men and hoisting up 400 tons of coal every day.  While Mine No. 1, on the edge of town, employed an additional 450 men and produced another 200 tons a day.
